We eventually found ourselves at la basilica di San Francesco.  So, fun fact: the hill San Francesco is buried on/where la basilica is, used to be called Hell’s Hill because prisoners were executed there.  When San Francesco decided to be buried up there, they renamed it Paradise’s Hill.  There are two churches in la basilica: the Lower Church, which is Romanesque and rather dim, and the Upper Church, which is Gothic and still rather dim.  I forget which one, I think the Upper Church, was the first church of said style to be built in Italia.  So, yup, that was our journey to Assisi.  I would definitely come back one day because there wasn’t enough time to go on the walks into the forest or to other churches.  (taken 21.2.2015)
